Experience the best of contemporary German cinema at KinoFest 2024, the Goethe-Institut’s flagship festival celebrating German film in Southeast Asia. This year, KinoFest embarks on an extensive tour across Thailand, hosting screenings in six cities, including enchanting outdoor venues.

Running from 5 to 17 November, film lovers in Bangkok, Nakhon Pathom, Hat Yai, Chiang Mai, Phayao, Phitsanulok, and Nakhon Ratchasima can immerse themselves in a curated selection of new German films.

Curated by acclaimed Indonesian film curator Lisabona Rahman, this year’s lineup includes standout films from the Berlinale and other prestigious festivals. Rahman’s careful curation promises a showcase of Germany’s latest storytelling, spanning diverse genres and perspectives.

The festival opens with the 2023 film “Die Theorie von Allem” (The Theory of Everything), directed by Timm Kröger. Set in 1962, this drama-thriller unfolds at a prestigious physics congress high in the Swiss Alps, where leading minds gather to explore a groundbreaking “Theory of Everything.” Yet, unsettling mysteries soon disrupt their intellectual pursuits. This atmospheric thriller, shot in stunning black-and-white, takes audiences on a suspenseful journey into the enigmatic realm of quantum mechanics.

One highlight is “Tech Tales Youth,” a collection of eight short films directed by young “Digital Natives,” showcasing narrative fiction, documentary, and animation to advocate for digital rights. Following the screening on 6 November, audiences can participate in a Q&A with three Thai directors.

The festival also features “The Glory of Life,” a 1920s drama-romance that tells a true story of forbidden love amidst social turmoil, with screenings on 6 and 13 November.

Other notable films include “Dancing Heartbeat,” a documentary exploring identity and artistry; “The Odyssey,” an animated drama about exile; and “FRANKY FIVE STAR,” a quirky comedy-drama about self-acceptance. Lastly, “She Chef” highlights the culinary journey of a rising female chef in Austria. With its rich array of narratives and themes, KinoFest 2024 promises to be a memorable celebration of contemporary cinema.
