Thailand is making significant strides to position itself as a world-class tourism destination, with a renewed emphasis on attracting international visitors and stimulating domestic travel. At a recent forum held at the Napalai Grand Ballroom in the Dusit Thani Hotel, Bangkok, Sorawong Thienthong, the country’s newly appointed Minister of Tourism and Sports, outlined the government’s comprehensive tourism strategy for the coming years.
In his address, Minister Sorawong will elaborate on the government’s ambitious “IGNITE THAILAND’S TOURISM” policy, which aims to bolster Thailand’s position as a leading global tourism hub. The initiative focuses on driving economic growth through collaboration with the private sector, encouraging investment in man-made attractions and major international events. By enhancing Thailand’s entertainment and cultural offerings, the Ministry of Tourism seeks to transform the country into a premier destination for travellers in Southeast Asia.
A standout project discussed at the forum was the “ONE MAP TOURISM” initiative, which will spotlight the unique attractions found in every province across the country. By encouraging both domestic and international tourists to explore lesser-known regions, the government hopes to ensure that the economic benefits of tourism are more evenly distributed across Thailand. This initiative also aims to promote the country’s rich cultural heritage and diverse offerings, from pristine beaches to historical landmarks.
Restoring Connectivity and Infrastructure Enhancements
Minister Sorawong also stressed the importance of restoring flight routes to pre-pandemic levels, with an emphasis on expanding access to secondary cities. Working alongside airlines and private-sector partners, the Ministry is focused on reintroducing lost routes, initially through charter flights, with the goal of transitioning to regular services. This strategy will improve Thailand’s accessibility for international travellers and encourage tourism in lesser-visited areas.
In addition to air connectivity, the government is investing in significant infrastructure upgrades to enhance land, water, and air transport systems. These improvements will facilitate smoother travel between regions and reinforce Thailand’s image as a world-class tourism destination.

Promoting Sustainability and Responsible Tourism
Thapanee Kiatphaibool, Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), highlighted the authority’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism practices. TAT’s “5 Must Do in Thailand” campaign will focus on showcasing the country’s most iconic attractions while emphasising regional tourism. This initiative seeks to highlight the distinct cultural and natural experiences that each province offers, from Thailand’s renowned cuisine to its picturesque landscapes.
TAT is also prioritising responsible tourism by encouraging visitors to adopt eco-friendly practices and respect local cultures. As part of the broader sustainability strategy, Thailand is championing the “Net Zero Tourism” initiative, which aims to reduce the carbon footprint of the tourism industry and ensure that the sector’s growth aligns with environmental goals.
Expanding International Markets and Embracing Digital Innovation
On the international front, TAT plans to increase travel frequency, extend stays, and drive higher spending, particularly from neighbouring countries. A focus on attracting younger, more dynamic travellers and sports enthusiasts is key to the agency’s strategy, with new campaigns targeting the “New Gen” market.
For long-haul markets, TAT is implementing an “Airlines Focus” strategy, aimed at enhancing flight frequencies, expanding route offerings, and improving connections between local airports in Thailand and international hubs. This initiative is designed to increase tourism from distant markets, improving the ease of access for global visitors.
Additionally, Thailand is embracing digital innovation in tourism. TAT is promoting a “Cashless Society”, which will streamline payments and improve the overall visitor experience. With an increasing number of international tourists opting for digital payment methods, this initiative will ensure smoother, more efficient transactions across the country.
Major Events to Drive Tourism Growth
As Thailand prepares for the peak tourism season in late 2024, TAT has announced a series of high-profile events to attract visitors from around the world. The Thailand Winter Festival, featuring “Vijit Chao Praya: The Colours of the River”, the nationwide Loy Krathong Festival, “Amazing Thailand Signature” experiences, and the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2024, are all set to draw large crowds and boost the country’s tourism economy.
Looking ahead, TAT is preparing for the “Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism Year 2025”, a year-long initiative that will sustain the momentum of tourism growth and further cement Thailand’s standing as a premier global destination.
With these comprehensive initiatives, Thailand is poised to solidify its position as a must-visit destination, offering a unique blend of cultural richness, adventure, and sustainability to travellers from around the globe.
Thailand has seen a strong influx of international visitors in the first half of 2024, with 17,501,283 foreign tourists arriving between January 1 and June 30, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The top countries of origin for travellers were China, Malaysia, India, South Korea, and Russia, reflecting the Kingdom’s broad appeal across Asia and beyond. This promising influx highlights the continued recovery and growth of Thailand’s tourism sector.
