Air New Zealand drops 2030 climate target amid industry hurdles

Air New Zealand has announced its withdrawal from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and its 2030 carbon reduction goal, highlighting significant challenges in the aviation industry’s fight against climate change.

Air New Zealand cited several uncontrollable factors, including delays in acquiring new, fuel-efficient aircraft, the high cost and limited supply of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), and inconsistent regulatory support.

“In recent months, and more so in the last few weeks, it has become apparent that potential delays to our fleet renewal plan pose an additional risk to the target’s achievability. Given these challenges, we have decided to retract the 2030 target and withdraw from the SBTi network immediately,” said CEO Greg Foran.

Despite this setback, Air New Zealand remains committed to its long-term goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and is working on setting a new near-term carbon reduction target.

“Air New Zealand remains dedicated to reaching its 2050 net zero carbon emissions target. Our efforts to transition away from fossil fuels continue, along with our advocacy for the necessary regulatory and policy support,” affirmed Chair Dame Therese Walsh.
