In a significant cultural milestone, Thailand’s Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is on the brink of being recognised as a World Heritage site.
The Thai Minister of Culture, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, has tasked the Department of Fine Arts with representing the nation at the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting in India, scheduled from 21 to 31 July 2024. The pivotal decision regarding Phu Phra Bat’s status is expected on 26 or 27 July.
Nestled in the Phu Phan Mountains of Udon Thani Province, Phu Phra Bat Historical Park is an archaeological treasure trove, celebrated for its prehistoric rock art, ancient dwellings, and religious shrines. Spanning several historical periods from the prehistoric era to the Dvaravati and Khmer periods, the park features highlights such as the Phra Bat Bua Bok stupa, Hor Nang Usa (Chamber of Usa), and rock shelters with ancient paintings.
The park’s rich historical tapestry is interwoven with local legends and spiritual practices, making it a site of profound significance for historians and spiritual seekers alike. With the meticulous preparation by the working group, confidence is high that Phu Phra Bat will join the prestigious list of World Heritage sites.
