From 30 June to 31 August 2024, Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town invites guests and locals to experience “The Taste of Penang,” a two-month culinary collaboration that brings the authentic flavours of Malaysia’s evocative island to Phuket’s old town. Diners can enjoy a series of traditional dishes crafted by two talented chefs from Courtyard by Marriott Penang at Krua Talad Yai, the hotel’s vibrant all-day restaurant.
Penang cuisine is celebrated for its rich and diverse culinary heritage, blending Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Thai influences. This vibrant fusion creates a unique and tantalising array of dishes, renowned for their bold flavours and aromatic spices. Popular dishes include Nasi Lemak, a fragrant rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaf; Penang Laksa, a tangy and spicy fish-based soup with tamarind, lemongrass, and chilli, served with thick rice noodles; and Hokkien Mee, a noodle soup with a rich, savoury prawn and pork broth, served with yellow noodles.
Every morning, Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town’s buffet breakfast will feature a Special Malaysian Corner (06:30 – 10:30 hrs) with rotating Malaysian classics such as nasi lemak, beef rendang, roti canai, and Penang curry mee. This diverse selection ensures guests can savour a variety of authentic dishes each day.
For lunch and dinner (12:00 – 22:00 hrs), Krua Talad Yai offers Malaysian Comfort Food favourites, including tau hu sumbat (stuffed & fried bean curd with vegetables and peanut sauce), udang harimau lemak cili api (tiger prawns in a spicy turmeric coconut cream sauce), daging rendang utara (beef tenderloin in coconut stew), and sago gula kabung (sago pearls with coconut cream and palm sugar).
At weekends, guests can indulge in the hotel’s signature Market Place Buffet, featuring Penang Delights every Friday and Saturday from 5 July to 31 August (18:00 – 22:00 hrs). Highlights include pasembur pulau mutiara (seafood fritter), Penang wok-hei koay teow (wok-fried flat rice noodles with seafood), Assam laksa (spicy and sour broth with rice noodles), satay, and lantong johor (compressed rice cake with sambal).
PHUKET’S HIDDEN GEM
Bang Rong: A Hidden Gem Beyond Phuket’s Glittering Shorelines
A world away from the bustling luxury of Phuket’s Pa Tong Beach, Bang Rong emerges as an unconventional gem on the east coast, distinct from its opulent western counterpart. Here, no stretches of white sandy beaches invite the glitterati, and the notion of exclusive beach clubs and extravagant Sunday brunches feels like a distant dream.
Chef Shazrin, Senior Chef de Partie, and Chef Loon, Chef de Cuisine from Courtyard by Marriott Penang, will be present to prepare dishes to order, engage with diners, and share insights into Penang’s rich culinary heritage.
“The Taste of Penang” runs from 30 June to 31 August 2024. The Malaysian Corner is part of the regular buffet breakfast, while Malaysian Comfort Food à la carte dishes are available for lunch and dinner, priced from THB 320 net per dish. The Market Place Buffet with Penang Delights is priced at THB 1,250 net per person.
Set in the heart of Phuket’s old town, Courtyard by Marriott Phuket Town is surrounded by vibrant markets, intriguing museums, and historic temples, making it the ideal base for exploring the island’s rich local culture. The hotel boasts 248 rooms and suites, each with a contemporary design that pays homage to Phuket’s heritage.
