As the sun aligns with Aries, Bangkok transforms into the pulsating heart of the Songkran festival. Celebrated from 11 to 15 April, Bangkok’s Songkran, the Thai New Year, unfolds in an exuberant display of culture and communal joy, particularly at the city’s historic centre, Sanam Luang.

This vibrant festival, also known as the Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024, invites both locals and tourists to immerse themselves in a rich cultural tapestry. The festivities commence with a grand parade along Ratchadamnoen Klang Avenue on 11 April, featuring the revered Buddha image that symbolises Songkran’s spiritual core. This is followed by the procession of Mahodhara Devi, represented this year by the luminous Anntonia Porsild, Miss Thailand Universe and Miss Universe runner-up.

The parade route, stretching from Phan Fa Lilat Bridge to Sanam Luang, showcases the unique Songkran traditions from 16 Thai provinces, including Chiang Mai and Khon Kaen. Each procession, adorned with colourful costumes and traditional performances, offers a breathtaking glimpse into the distinct cultural heritage of its region.

Beyond the parade, Sanam Luang is the nexus of non-stop festivities, ranging from traditional Khon dances and EDM concerts to electrifying Muay Thai exhibitions, captivating all who gather.

The celebration extends to the scenic banks of the Chao Phraya River, enveloping historic sites like Wat Pho and Asiatique The Riverfront Destination in the festivities. At Wat Pho, recognised by UNESCO for its cultural significance, the festival features traditional activities such as building sand pagodas and showcasing the iconic Thai massage.

No visit to Songkran in Bangkok is complete without experiencing the playful water battles of Khao San Road, where locals and visitors alike arm themselves with water guns and buckets, turning the street into a lively battleground of joy and laughter. This spirited tradition is echoed in Silom, where the urban landscape becomes a water-soaked playground amid skyscrapers.

For those preferring a drier experience, Bangkok’s mega malls offer refuge with their own unique celebrations. IconSiam, for instance, blends tradition with modernity at its THAICONIC Songkran Celebration, featuring water sprinkling ceremonies and a water splash park set against the backdrop of the Chao Phraya River.
