Thailand dazzles with the enchanting ‘Loy Krathong: The Colourful Waterways’ festival, unfolding along Bangkok’s picturesque Phadung Krung Kasem Canal, adjacent to the iconic Hua Lamphong railway station. A flagship event for the Thailand Winter Festival, the Loy Krathong celebration at Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem promises an unforgettable experience for both festival-goers and visitors, presenting a series of spectacular cultural shows against the backdrop of the city’s historic waterway.

Loy Krathong, the captivating Festival of Lights in Thailand, turns the night into a spectacle as floating krathongs—a small container adorned with flickering candles—gracefully drift on the water. Celebrated on the full moon night of the 12th month in the traditional Thai lunar calendar, usually in November, it symbolizes a grand expression of gratitude to the water goddess Ganga. Locals and tourists alike release intricately crafted krathongs—decorative floating offerings—into rivers, lakes, and ponds, symbolizing the release of negativity and the embrace of new beginnings. It’s a magical spectacle capturing the essence of Thai culture.

The enchanting festival at Phadung Krung Kasem Canal extends its allure until midnight on Monday, November 27.

Showcasing the joy and beauty inherent in the Thai way of life, intimately connected with its waterways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has meticulously crafted a lively celebration venue along the historic canal. This captivating setting is curated under the theme ‘Moonlight Reflection Loy Krathong Along the Canal,’ inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the cultural richness and scenic splendour of this extraordinary event.

The highlight encompasses the mesmerizing ‘Lighting Illumination Show,’ featuring lanterns adorned with lights that serve as symbolic representations of the cultural festivals in five distinct regions of Thailand. Among these are the elegant ‘Lanna Lantern,’ embodying the spirit of the Yi Peng Festival in Chiang Mai province, the exquisite Palm Leaf Krathong from Sukhothai province, the enchanting string of flickering ‘Krathong Sai’ from Tak, the eco-friendly Banana Sheath Krathong representing Samut Songkhram, and the charming Rice Ear Krathong originating from Roi Et. This eclectic display invites visitors to immerse themselves in the rich tapestry of Thailand’s cultural celebrations.

Moreover, an array of activities enhances appreciation for Thai traditions, including cultural performances, exhibitions spotlighting royal cuisine, and a unique kratong showcase representing the five distinctive regions. Adding to the cultural experience, a nostalgic market reminiscent of the Rattanakosin era beckons with a delightful selection of Thai culinary delights.
